When you go to a yarn or fabric store, don’t you just
want everything? It is soooo hard to decide. Here are some
ideas to help you choose yarn or fabric that you’ll
love.
When you are in the store, do you keep going back to a certain
yarn or fabric? If you do, that’s probably the one you
should get. If your project takes several different yarns
or fabrics, make the one you love most your starting point.
If you are making something with more than one color, its
easiest if all the yarns or fabrics are the same weight and
are made out of the same kind of fibers.

Now, how do you decide what colors go together? A
tool that’s really helpful is a color wheel. Color
wheels help you understand which colors go together.
They can also give you ideas about color combinations
you never even thought of!
If you don’t have a color wheel yet, look in
magazines and tear out pictures that use colors you
like. Pretty soon you’ll start to see a pattern.
Are you a “blue” person? Pink? What’s
your favorite color? You can also look at flowers and
things in nature to get ideas for color combinations.

Another thing to think about is how
much of each color to use. Colors often look more interesting
when you use different amounts of each color. Think
of it like this: Use a gallon of your main color, a
quart of some colors and an ounce of the last color.
That means you should use mostly one color with a smaller
amount of other colors and just a little bit of the
last color. That little bit of color is called the accent.
It looks really great if the accent color is bright
or sparkly. You could use buttons or beads for the accent
color.
