You may need to join a new yarn when you run out of yarn, or to
change colors if you are making a project that uses
multi-colors.
It’s best to join a new yarn at the beginning of a row so that
you don’t have to make a knot in the middle of a row.
That might
show through your work or come undone. If it came undone, it
could leave a hole in the middle of a row. Joining at the
beginning of a row also makes it easier to weave in the ends
when you are finished.

To attach a new yarn, cut the end of your old yarn so there
is about a 6-inch tail. |
 |
Make a loose knot as close as possible to the first stitch in
the row. |
 |
Start knitting with the new yarn. |
 |
Trim the end of the new yarn so you have two 6-inch tails on
the side of your work. |
