You can use these cords for handles on bags. You can use them for curtain tie backs. You can make three cords and braid them together for a belt. You could use skinny ones to write words on book covers and back packs and pillows and sweatshirts and… well, you get the idea….The cords can be any size and used for all kinds of things.

Here are the written directions. Watch the video so you can see exactly how it’s done. You’ll see that it’s much easier to do this with a friend. It’s soooo fun!

IMPORTANT!!!!!
It’s best to ask a grown up to help you the first time you try this. Also, don’t forget to ask permission to use an electric mixer before you do this on your own!

Materials needed:
Leftover yarns of different weights that look good together
Portable mixer
Two big paper clips

Measure and cut the strands of yarn about three times as long as you want the finished cord to be. For example, to make a cord 40” long, cut each piece of yarn 120”. You can use as many yarns as you want. The more strands you use, the fatter the cord will be. (Hint: measure off one piece of yarn and then just cut all the others to match)

Tie a knot close to the end of the bunch of yarns.
Open a large paper clip and put one end through the knot.
Put one beater into the mixer.
Hook the paper clip onto the beater.
Give the other end of the yarn bunch to a friend. (If you’re making the cord by yourself, tie a knot in the other end of the yarn pieces. Put an opened paper clip in the knot and hook it something sturdy.)
Turn on the mixer to low and run until the strands are twisted. As the yarns twist together, the ends need to move closer to each other, so you will have to move slowly toward the other end. If you don’t, the beater flies out of the mixer! And, YES! It happened to me!
Keep mixing until the twisted yarn begin to fold on itself if you ease the tension a little.
When it’s all mixed, keep tension on the twisted yarns as you fold the whole length exactly in half.
Now, hold on to the knots, let it go of the other end and watch the whole thing twist up on itself.
Undo the old knots. Be careful not to let the cord untwist. Make a new big knot about 4” from the end.
Make a knot about 4” from the folded end. Cut the yarn at the fold.
Untwist the yarn below both knots and fluff up the tails like a tassel.
